RSS Tirupur District Secretary Anand was stabbed in retaliation for the alleged assault of a person of the community, police said.

Tension prevailed in Mettupalayam, about 40 kms from here, following an attack on an RSS activist allegedly by some persons belonging to a particular community.

RSS Tirupur District Secretary Anand was stabbed in retaliation for the alleged assault of a person of the community yesterday, police said.

Anand had been hospitalised, they said.

A few persons torched a Government-owned bus at the Bus stand protesting the attack, police said.

A posse of police have been deployed in the town and the situation is under control. Senior police officials visited the spot.

In Chennai, state BJP President Pon Radhakrishnan condemned the attack on RSS functionary and said such incidents only showed extremist elements were taking roots in the state.

In a statement, he recalled recent murder of BJP state medical wing chief Dr Aravind Reddy in Vellore and state Executive Committee member Pugazhendi in Nagapattinam and blamed 'inaction' by police for recurring attacks targeting members of BJP and other Hindu outfits.
