The news may irk BSP Supremo Mayawati! Even as Dalits in Uttar Pradesh have upped the ante against the ruling BJP following controversy over Supreme Court ‘dilution’ order on SC/ST Act, the Ambedkar Mahasabha has announced to confer prestigious ‘Dalit Mitra’ award to the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14.

Ambedkar Mahasabha is an influential organisation of staunch followers of Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. The Mahasabha carries out activities to promote and spread the message of Dr Ambedkar among members of the Dalit community across state.

It is also a scared place for Ambedkarites as an urn carrying Babasaheb’s mortal remains is placed in the office. Visit of any community member to the state capital remains incompleted till he pays homage to Babasaheb's urn at the Mahasabha office.

Refusing to be drag into any political controversy over the award, the Mahasabha Chairman Lalji Prasad ‘Nirmal’ told media that the decision to confer the award to the Chief Minister was taken by the award committee after going through the Dalit-friendly decisions taken Yogi Adityanath during his regime.

The Chairman claimed that the committee was impressed by Chief Minister’s decision to correct and complete the name of Dr Ambedkar by adding ‘Ramji’ in the middle. The Committee also lauded his government’s decision to make mandatory installation of Dr Ambedkar’s photograph in all state government offices.

“No one had ever thought of correcting the name of Dr Ambedkar. It was a far greater tribute to him than erecting memorials in his name. Even a dalit-friendly government in the state did not accord as much respect as the present government has bestowed on Babasaheb,” pointed the Chairman, in an obvious jibe at the BSP chief.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Ambedkar Mahasabha office in January 2016. He had promised to hold Dr Ambedkar in highest esteem and continue to work for Dalit empowerment.

“He could be Lord Ram of Dalits,” the Mahasabha had reacted after PM Modi’s visit.
