Akbaruddin Owaisi is done merely winning in the Chandrayangutta constituency in Hyderabad. On Tuesday, the AIMIM leader stormed the seat for the fifth time, and with a massive margin that is only growing each time he gets on the ballot.

Akbaruddin, known locally as 'chhoti sherwani' in contrast to his big brother 'badi sherwani' Asaduddin Owaisi, secured 95,339 votes. His nearest rival, BJP's Shahejadi Sayyad, scored 15,075. That is an incredible victory margin of over 80,000 votes. The total number of votes cast in the constituency was 1,40,290, which means the margin of victory - and note, this is not the total votes he secured - was 57.21 percent.

In fact, Owaisi's victory was so comprehensive, you could take the all the votes secured by each one of the 14 other candidates and then double them, and he would still have a lead of about 7,500 votes.

It certainly helps Akbaruddin that he is from the political dynasty that has led his party, the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), from 1957. His grandfather and father - Abdul Wahed Owaisi and Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi - were AIMIM president. His brother, Asaduddin, is now the party chief.

Akbaruddin, 48, first fought elections in 1999. He won, and has returned to Chandrayangutta for re-election in 2004, 2009, 2014, and now in 2018. He has constantly expanded his margin of victory from 6.24 percent in 1999, 8.67 percent in 2004, 15.54 percent in 2009 and 43.8 percent in 2014.

His win record notwithstanding, Akbaruddin has 14 criminal cases against him, most of them for incendiary speeches in which he mocked or insulted Hindu gods or practices, or was perceived to have been inciting violence.

Controversial as he may be from time to time for his provocative speeches, Owaisi has ensured that Chandrayangutta doesn't merely remain his constituency but a fortress.
