SEPARATE WAYS: RJD leader’s counsel alleged that his client was ‘mentally harassed’

Less than six months after taking nuptial vows, Tej Pratap Yadav, the elder son of former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, filed for a divorce at the Patna Court on Friday evening.
Tej Pratap was married to Aishwarya Rai, the daughter of RJD MLA Chandrika Rai and granddaughter of former Bihar CM Daroga Rai, at a grand ceremony in Patna on May 12 this year. The match was decided by both families, the ring ceremony was held in April and Aishwarya was believed to be her mother-in-law's choice.
According to a source, Tej Pratap's counsel Yashwant Kumar filed the divorce petition in the court of Umashankar Dwidevi and has alleged that he was mentally harassed due to this marriage. The case has been listed for hearing later this month.
Soon after filing for the divorce, Tej Pratap started for Ranchi to meet his incarcerated father Lalu Prasad but returned midway. In a video clip taken on Friday evening, Tej, clad in white kurta and forehead smeared with 'tilak', only says he is leaving but did not comment on the divorce plea.
The initial photographs of the marriage that were shared with the media -- Tej Pratap and Aishwarya riding a bicycle or visiting temples -- had sent across that message that all was hunky-dory in their marriage. However, a source said the couple was not living together for the last few months. "The family members too were taken by surprise by Tej Pratap's move. No one knew the situation was this bad. Let's see if the family can make him see some sense," said a source in the RJD.
After the reports of the divorce petition spilt out, Aishwarya reached Rabri's 10-Circular Road residence with both her parents though none of them talked to the mediapersons. Other family members including Rabri's eldest daughter Misa Bharti also reached home to discuss the matter.
For the last few months, Tej Pratap was in news for alleged differences with his younger brother Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. He was also on a tour of Vrindavan and some other places of religious importance for some time.
After the May wedding, people had even expected that Aishwarya would also enter into politics, especially as she made a debut in the political posters of the RJD.
