When a self-effacing 18-year-old student sang a Punjabi song during a college study tour, little did she know that this was going to be her stairway to stardom. Isha Andotra, BA (second year) student of Kathua district of Jammu, has become an Internet singing star after an amateur video of her Punjabi number became a chart buster notching 8.4 million views and 2.37 lakh shares on Facebook.

Interestingly, the new queen of the social media has no cell phone, and therefore no WhatsApp account, and no presence on the social networking sites.

If this was not enough, the singing offers galore and producers’ emissaries are making a beeline to woo her for upcoming next project. Unfazed by the new found popularity, Isha has refused all the offers because she wants to focus on her studies.

“We had gone to Purthu to visit Grassland for our Environmental Sciences project. During the trip my friends insisted I sing a few lines. I sang from my heart and all my friends and our staff members recorded it on their mobile phones. I don’t know who uploaded the video on Facebook, and on YouTube. It has become so popular that I am getting calls”, Isha told DNA.

The 18-year-old and her elder sister have been singing in school and college functions since childhood. But they never considered professional singing till Isha’s video went viral. Isha and her sister have not received any formal training in music from any school or institution. “My sister and I have been singing together in school and college events. Since my sister is now pursuing her Masters in Social Work, I am singing solo”, she said.

“A secretary of a Patiala-based music company visited our home and offered to train me professionally for one and half years before launching me in the industry. But I sought more time to think. I want to complete my education before making a foray in the industry,” she said.

Isha’s parents are proud, but they want her to complete her education. “It feels great to see and hear about her popularity. My suggestion to Isha is to complete her studies first and then see how things shape up”, said Krishna Devi, Isha’s mother.
