East Godavari district collector Neetu Prasad said here on Tuesday that technologies like like global positioning systems (GPS) and closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) would be used to detect illegal transport of sand.

She said that efforts have been made for effective distribution of sand to meet market demand and encourage more open sales in the district. She said that consumers could get sand at the rate of Rs 2,000 per unit.

An online payment facility would be made available within three days so that consumers could directly purchase from sand from 'Meeseva' centres in the district, she said. She said that sand worth Rs 2.67 crore was sold through 13,368 units in the district and an amount of Rs 41 lakh has been paid to boatmens' societies, besides Rs 2.46 lakh paid to self help groups' federations.
