In the most recent incident akin to the ongoing 'Love Jihad' controversy, champion shooter Tara Shahdeo has accused her husband of forcing her to convert to Islam after marriage.

In an FIR filed on Wednesday, Tara alleged that her husband Ranjit Kumar Kohli, beat her and forced her to convert to Islam after they got married in July. Kohli, who faces charges of deceit, exploitation and torture lodged by his newly-married wife, was arrested in Delhi last night

On his part Kohli alias Rakibul Hasan admitted to having read the Koran since 2007. He however claimed that the allegations made by his wife are false. According to various media reports, Kohli's acquaintances have admitted that he was known as Rakibul Hasan Khan to them.

Kohli and his mother Kaushalya Rani alias Kausar Parveen were arrested and taken to a Delhi court where the Jharkhand Police has sought a transit remand to take him to Ranchi later on Wednesday.

Love Jihad?
This incident comes at a time when the controversy around 'forced conversion' has been under much public scrutiny. A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Yogi Adityanath triggered massive outrage when a video involving him asking his supporters to marry the girls of another community surfaced.

In her FIR, Tara alleges that Kohli did not disclose he was a Muslim and instead faked his identity as a Hindu during their courtship. She married Kohli on July 7 this year as per Hindu tradition, and informs that he only revealed his true identity on the first night of their marriage and forced her to convert to Islam as well. After suffering abuse for a month, she managed to get in touch with her family, which then led to her rescue, Zee News reports.

Shahdeo also goes on to accuse the Jharkhand administration of deliberately delaying Khan's arrest to give him time to destroy evidence. According to Zee News reports, DGP Rajiv Kumar has denied these charges and stressed that the police had acted immediately, and pointed out that Khan's house in Ranchi has been sealed and his cars confiscated.

Chief minister Hemant Soren has assured Tara Shahdeo justice and asked Hindu outfits not to politicise the matter.
