Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency is the fiefdom of the Adhikari family which gained rapid prominence during the Nandigram movement against setting up of chemical hub in fertile land. While the twin movement of Nandigram and Singur catapulted Mamata Banerjee to power in West Bengal, it ensured Suvendu Adhikari became the most important political person in East Midnapore district.

His rise was parallel to fall of former Tamluk MP Lakshman Chandra Seth who is the strongman from Haldia and staked his entire political reputation on the Nandigram chemical hub only to lose out politically.  He had a fallout with CPI(M), left party to join BJP and after a brief stint is now part of Congress. He is the Congress candidate from Tamluk. CPI(M)'s candidate is young turk Ibrahim Ali who was trounced by Suvendu Adhirai by a margin of 2.4 lakh votes in 2014. When Suvendu became Minister in the Mamata government,  he resigned in 2016 and in byelection, his brother Dibyendu Adhikari became MP winning by 4.97 lakh votes. Hence, the task for the opposition will be extremely difficult to defeat Dibyendu.

Dibyendu has failed to use nearly 25% of his MPLAD fund, something opposition has been pointing out. Others are accusing he has done very little for the fledgling Haldia industrial belt. However MP believes he has done to the best of abilities in the limited three years period he had.

BJP has steadily increased vote share and will be hoping for an upset in Tamluk. The BJP local unit of historical Tamluk, the land of Matangini Hazra wasn't happy with the candidate selection. BJP has fielded Keertan singer Siddharth Nashkar, who is not from East Midnapore district. He is from Nabadwip and has very limited name recall among the voters in Tamluk. So he is heavily dependent on PM Modi's appeal for garnering votes.

The assembly segments under Tamluk Lok Sabha ,Panskura Purba , Moyna , Nandakumar, Mahisadal , Haldia (SC)  NS Nandigram . In the past, Congress has won the seat four times, TMC thrice and CPI(M) has won seven times. It is probably ironic that three-time- MP Lakshman Seth is fighting for his political existence in Tamluk even as Adhikari family hopes to extend its political domination. Tamluk goes to vote on May 12.
