Wednesday has been a hard day for Prithika Yashini. She was one among the many appearing for tests as part of the sub-inspector selection process in Tamil Nadu. But what makes her story different is that she is the first transgender woman taking part in the recruitment process for sub-inspectors in the state.

Competing in the woman’s category, Prithika Yashini was elated when she passed the first level of tests on Tuesday. She ran the 400 metres in 1.50 minutes as against the upper limit of 2.5 minutes. Wednesday was the day of final selection, when each candidate was informed whether they had made the cut or not.

Speaking to DNA, her friend Bhanu, an engineering student in Arkonam, who was also with her at the Rajarathinam Stadium where the physical test was conducted said, “Prithika was just informed that she has not qualified. But she had passed all the tests with flying colours. She was to run the 100 metres in 17.5 seconds or less. The officers here told us that she made it in 18.6 seconds and hence didn’t clear the test. We are very upset. We plan to take this up in court.”

Talking about Prithika's struggle, Bhanu adds, “Prithika has had to fight every step of the way. She had to go to court to be allowed to sit for the exam and take the physical test. In fact, they didn’t send a call letter for the physical or exam - they just informed us on the phone the night before. We don’t know how they disqualified her in the 100 m so we need to go to court once again.”

Prithika has diligently worked on her fitness and athletics by waking up at 5am everyday and running on a ground in Sriperumbudur. She appeared for the exams in May which she cleared and was asked to come for the final physical test which happened on Tuesday and Wednesday in Chennai.
