Farmers in Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul have received compensation cheques to the tune of Rs 5 and Rs 10, the Times of India reported on Friday. The cheques have been issued by the Dindigul Central Cooperative Bank Ltd in a bid to alleviate farm distress.

According to the report, the state government has admitted to the error, which they say happened during the disbursal of cheques in certain villages of Dindigul. They added that they have ordered insurance companies to rectify the “clerical errors.”

Farmers are eligible to receive up to Rs 26,000/acre of paddy based on yield loss, Rs 12,000 for pulses, and up to Rs 20,000 for millets as compensation under crop insurance.

The farmers have been demanding a drought relief package of Rs 40,000 crore, farm loan waiver and setting up of Cauvery Management Board by the Centre.

The farmers had even held agitations in the national capital again was taken after the Tamil Nadu government failed to meet their demands.

Besides, the agrarian community, including those from Tamil Nadu, have set up a 10-member working committee to begin a nation-wide 'padyathra' demanding implementation of Swaminathan Committee report and providing better MSP (Minimum Support Price) for agricultural produces.

Meanwhile, the Cauvery delta farmers, who have been at the receiving end due to successive monsoon failure, fear the Supreme Court verdict reducing TN share of Cauvery water by 14.75 TMC would further affect irrigation in over one lakh acres of farmland. However, the farmers want the Centre to immediately constitute the Cauvery Management Board as per the order to ensure timely release of the state's share of water.
