Electoral officials have registered a case against BJP Coimbatore South Assembly Constituency candidate Vanathi Srinivasan for allegedly violating the model code of conduct by campaigning inside a temple.
Police said District electoral officer and Collector Archana Patnaik received information that Vanathi was spotted in a temple on Thursday with a party shawl and handing out pamphlets to Keralite devotees on 'Vishu', Malayalam New year. She had reportedly distributed pamphlets in Malayalam, seeking votes and also greeting them on the new year.
However, Vanathi claimed she and her party workers were distributing pamphlets outside the temple and it was only on the request of some photographers that she had entered the temple and distributed it to a devotee for photo purposes.
On information, election department officials took note of the incident and registered a case of violation of model code of conduct, police said.
