With the water level in Cauvery and Coleroon rivers rising steadily following heavy discharge from Mettur dam, Tamil Nadu government – which has sounded flood alert in 11 districts – have shifted about 8,000 people in five districts to 86 relief camps as a precautionary measure on Friday.

The district administration and police personnel were in high alert along the Cauvery river banks with the inflow expected to go up on Saturday with very heavy discharge from the Karnataka dams.

District authorities in low-lying areas along the Cauvery have been instructed to take adequate measures to tackle the prevailing flood situation due to heavy discharge of water from the Mettur, Bhavani Sagar and Amravathi dams in Tamil Nadu. A total of 492 personnel of the Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force have been deployed along the banks of Cauvery in various districts to undertake relief measures.

In addition to 1.7 lakh cusecs of water released from the Mettur dam, Cauvery river has swelled further downstream on Friday with the inflow of 65,000 cusecs from Bhavani river and 8100 cusecs from Amaravathi river. With over two lakh cusecs of water released from Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini dams in Karnataka expected to reach the Mettur dam on Saturday, the total discharge in the Cauvery river is expected to go over record three-lakh cusecs at Mokkombu (Upper Anicut) near Tiruchi bypassing the previous high of 2.5 lakh in 2005.

The situation was particularly bad in Erode district where 5,875 people were moved to 66 relief camp after their localities were flooded by overflowing Cauvery. Flood alert was in place for Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Trichy, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Ariyalur districts.
