Tamil Nadu: Soon, mobile charging points at 76 suburban railway stations

Of these, 16 stations are major stations while the others are smaller stations in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, parts of Villupuram and Vellore districts.

People will now be able to charge their mobile phones at 76 railway stations across Chennai, thanks to a new initiative by the Southern Railways. Of these, 16 stations are major stations while the others are smaller stations in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, parts of Villupuram and Vellore districts.

A railway official told The New Indian Express, that the initiative was started last month. Installation of mobile phone charging points are to be completed by the end of March and charging points will be available on both sides of the platform as well. The report adds that mobile charging points will be installed on the main lines that are meant for express and mail services in Chengalpattu, Tambaram, Tindivanam, Arakkonam, Katpadi and Vaniyambadi railway stations. Sullurupettai and Naidupet stations are also part of this. 

Maasilamani, general secretary of the Federation of Rail Passenger Associations (Chennai-Tiruttani-Kancheepuram) has commended the railways and told the daily that railways should not just introduce these services, but also ensure they are maintained.
