In a stark reminder of dismal record of women safety in India, a man in Tamil Nadu was sentenced for 43 years for raping and impregnating his teenage daughter.

On Wednesday, the Mahila Court in Tami Nadu's Tiruchy dictrict awarded three consecutive terms of life imprisonment and a year’s rigorous imprisonment to a 51-year-old daily wager for raping his 14-year-old daughter and impregnating her.

District sessions judge Jacintha Martin ordered S Kamaraj, the 51-year-old convict, of Arasangudi village in Tiruverumbur to undergo 43-years imprisonments for repeatedly raping his minor daughter since July 2013 by threatening her to keep mum.

In 2014, the girl developed some physical problems and informed her mother Pazhaniammal regarding the past incidents.

Subsequently, the girl underwent a medical examination that confirmed she was pregnant and the doctors said termination of the foetus would be dangerous.

The girl’s mother lodged a complaint with the Tiruverumbur All Women police station on December 31, 2014.

Following the complaint, the police who registered a case under various sections including under the POCSO Act arrested Kamaraj.

The police investigation revealed that Kamaraj had undergone seven years imprisonment for murdering a neighbour and had been looking for a job ever since his release from jail. Kamaraj had forced himself on his daughter and repeatedly raped her when his wife was out for work.

Meanwhile, the 13-year-old was delivered of a girl baby at Kasturi Bhat hospital in Dindigul in March 2015 and the baby was handed over to an adoption centre run by the hospital. However, the baby died due to various complications in June 2015.

In order to prove Kamaraj’s crime, the police exhumed the baby's body and a DNA test was carried out in October 2015. "The DNA test confirmed that the girl was impregnated by her father Kamaraj," said special public prosecutor G Krishnaveni Thamaraiselvan.
