In a first of its kind, the heart and lungs harvested from a 19-year-old organ donor in Kochi were flown to Chennai on August 12 for transplantations. But this is just another in the series of achievements in the area of organ transplants for the state. Tamil Nadu has become the leading state for organ transplants in the country - yet again - with its model being hailed as the best.
From January 1 till August 13, 2015, the state has seen around 36 heart transplants, 23 lung and 64 heart valve transplants. There were 108 liver transplants and 211 kidney transplants as well. Eye donation, which is the most common in the country, saw 176 cornea transplants.
The awareness about organ donation is quite high in Tamil Nadu and the statistics have been consistently high for the state over the last few years.
There are numerous hospitals that are renowned in the state for their organ transplants and work in this particular area. The Tamil Nadu Network for Organ Sharing (http://www.tnos.org/) and TRANSTAN: Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu, have been active as well.
