In a first in Tamil Nadu, the Directorate of Public Examination released the Plus II results on Friday, thereby ending the practice of ranking students at the state and the district levels. The overall pass percentage was 92.1 per cent, a marginal increase of 0.7 per cent from 2016. While the pass percentage of girls was 94.5 per cent, it was 89.3 per cent for boys.

A total of 8.93 lakh students appeared for the examination, while 8.22 lakh students cleared it.

The School Education Department’s initiative to make the results available through SMS was a welcome relief to nervous students. Within 10 minutes of the board releasing the results, most students received it on their registered mobile numbers. The SMS also listed a neat break-up of the total marks — both theory and practical, the total score, the name of the candidate, along with other relevant details.

With 97.85 per cent, Virudhunagar district recorded the highest pass percentage. Chennai ranked 16th with a 92.99 pass percentage. None of the government schools in Chennai, Thiruvallur, and Kancheepuram achieved a 100 per cent pass result, while 292 of the 2,640 government schools have secured cent per cent results.

A day before the announcement, the School Education Department announced that it would not release the toppers’ ranking list. The total number of individual centum in all subjects put together, increased from 15, 258 in 2015 to 25,435 this year.

While no student secured a centum in language, 187 students secured a centum in Physics, 1,123 in Chemistry, 3,656 in Mathematics and 1,647 in Computer Science.

Commerce and Economics saw more centums, 8,301 and 1,717 respectively.
