The DMK has pledged that it will reduce the price of milk in Tamil Nadu if the party comes into power. In the last five years, a litre of milk has gone by the rate of Rs 10 and now the The Tamil Nadu Milk Producers Welfare Association has announced that it will be supporting the DMK in the upcoming elections.

A report in The New Indian Express states that they took this decision after a meeting in Salem. K.A Sengotuvel, the Federation’s State President, has told the daily that nearly 40 lakh farmers who produce about 1,88,00,000 lakh litres of milk a day are going to be influenced by this decision.

Sengotuvel said that AIADMK government had raised the price of milk but the quantity of milk produced by the farmers' was not being bought by the Cooperative Milk Producing Unions (Aavin’s milk dairies). Since the Cooperative sector dairies have not increased their capacities, milk was being returned to the farmers'.

Though the Tamil Nadu Milk Producers Welfare Association made appeals to the AIADMK government  about this, the situation was not corrected and there was a big gap between the demand and supply. The milk that Aavin was returning to farmers' was being sold to private dairies. However, these dairies pay less that the government procurement price. The government procurement that is being paid by Aavin is Rs 27.10 per litre while private dairies pay between Rs 22 to Rs 24.

The Tamil Nadu Milk Producers Welfare Association has asked that milk be included in the noon meal at Anganwadi menu so that milk returned by Aavin does not go to waste. Despite trying to meet Chief Minister Jayalalithaa regarding this issue, the Association was not given access.
