The temperatures across Tamil Nadu are hitting 40 degree celsius, but election campaigns are in full swing.

The temperature in Chennai is likely to go down and remain around 36 degree celsius from May 1 to May 15 according to a MET department official. But cities like Madurai, Trichy and Salem are still going to be sizzling at 39 degree to 40 degree celsius.

Despite the hot weather, the election rallies are seeing massive crowds. On Sunday, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa addressed a rally in Coimbatore which saw the temperature at 38 to 40 degrees over the weekend. She had been holding rallies in the afternoon at 3 pm, but after the death of four party workers in Vriddhachalam and Salem in the last few weeks, she shifted her rallies to 4 pm. Jayalalithaa has held eight rallies so far and her speeches are usually about 45 minutes long. The DMK on the other hand, has Karunanidhi on stage for just about 20 minutes.

The parties are providing free water, some cash and biriyani to the supporters who sit for hours in the hot sun waiting for the leaders to take the stage, Before they arrive at the venue, many walk for several kilometres as well. A New Indian Express report said that around 15 people had to be hospitalised after they collapsed due to sunstroke at elections rallies. Police officers too collapsed in the heat in some places.

The state is set to go to elections on May 16 and the parties are forced to hold rallies despite the unforgiving weather.
