Amidst the big political crisis in Tamil Nadu after sacked Treasurer and Chief Minister Panneerselvam revolted against AIADMK party General Secretary Sasikala, the acting Governor C Vidyasagar Rao, who doubles up as the Governor of Maharashtra, was totally missing from the scene.

Even as everyone in the state awaited his return to resolve the crisis, the Governor was in Mumbai on Wednesday and also reportedly attended a wedding in Delhi on Tuesday. These led to several theories doing the rounds speculating about his elusiveness - the suggestions ranged from the Governor's 'non-neutral stand' to the Centre’s 'support' to Panneerselvam to the possibility of President's Rule.

Rao avoided interaction with the media on Wednesday even as journalists queued up outside Mumbai Raj Bhavan since morning. In the evening, he attended the convocation program of the Institute of Chemical Technology. He didn't speak to media even there, but sought to clear the air about his “absence” from Tamil Nadu in his address at the public-funded deemed university.

“Today I was very doubtful whether I would be able to attend this convocation. Perhaps you are aware that I am holding additional charge as Governor of Tamil Nadu,” said Rao at the beginning of his speech. He continued, “A lot of political developments are taking place in that state. The moment you put on the TV set, you see political action and noisy debates. Sometimes there are questions, where is the Governor. I am happy that I am here, in the midst of all of you.”

A Raj Bhavan official justified the Governor's presence in the function saying, “He attended the ICT convocation as the Chancellor of Universities in the State. The invitation was accepted long back.”

Meanwhile, media reports say the Governor plans to reach Chennai on Thursday afternoon.
