Tamil Nadu COVID recoveries touch six-lakh mark, active cases at 44,095

One-fifth of Chennai’s population has been exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Tamil Nadu has surpassed 6 lakh Covid-19 recoveries. According to the state government health bulletin issued on Sunday, a total of 6.02 lakh people have recovered from the deadly pandemic. There are 44,095 Active cases and these patients are undergoing treatment. 

Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are the top states in terms of COVID-19 recoveries state the Union Health Ministry.

According to the health department data, 5,015 persons tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday while 5,005 persons were discharged from hospitals following treatment. The cumulative figure of Covid-19 positive cases is over 6.56 lakh. Total of over 83.22 lakh tests has been performed in Tamil Nadu, with over 88,000 tests being done between Saturday and Sunday. 

Tamil Nadu is the fourth among the list of worst-hit states in the country considering the total number of cases. Maharashtra, Andhra and Karnataka are ahead of Tamil Nadu. But considering the number of people who have lost their lives, Tamil Nadu is the second-worst affected state. It was only recently that Tamil Nadu surpassed 10,000 deaths owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the capital city of Chennai continues to lead the Covid-19 infection table with 1,250 persons testing positive for the virus on Thursday. The total Chennai tally stands at over 1.80 lakh. Western districts of Tamil Nadu such as Coimbatore, Namakkam, Salem are seeing a surge in cases, although they remain well within 400 on a daily basis. 

One-fifth of Chennai’s population has been exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 infection. This has come to light in a serosurvey conducted by the government authorities between mid-July and early-August. SARS-CoV-2 is a virus that causes Covid-19 infection. The study was based on the analysis of blood samples from 12,405 individuals from different zones of the city.  

Population-based serosurveys are performed to measure the spread of infection in the community. Such surveys are done by performing blood tests on individuals to check if they have developed antibodies to the infection. Initial findings of the report state that, “around 80 per cent of the population is still susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection in Chennai”. 

The authorities have also said that another Serosurvey is underway and will be covering streets at random, for over two months.

Earlier in September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi through video interaction with the Chief Ministers of states had appreciated Tamil Nadu’s efforts in mass testing, tracing and isolation.

During his interaction with the Prime Minister, state chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said he had personally toured 26 districts to review the performance in the fight against the pandemic. He had also specified that the state was strictly employing the highly reliable RT-PCR tests

From September 1st, in line with Unlock 4.0 aimed at reviving economic activity, Tamil Nadu has resumed to near-normalcy. Only academic institutions, Cinema halls, swimming pools, Amusement parks, big auditoriums, beaches,  zoos, museums, tourist places and similar public places remain shut, until further notice. Religious, political, social, cultural, educational events and celebrations continue to be curbed.

However, Tamil Nadu still continues with the procedure of E-Pass for inter-state travel. But these travel-pass applications are instantly approved, as opposed to the scrutiny that they underwent earlier. 

After a review meeting in late September, state Chief Minister K Palaniswami had announced new relaxations. According to the new rules, film shootings were permitted with a capacity of not more than 100 persons. Permission to land 100 aircrafts per day at Chennai airport was granted, while restaurants and tea stalls could function from 6 am to 9 pm for dine-in and until 10 pm for takeaway.
