Upset over his father's drinking habit, a Class 12 student on Wednesday committed suicide by hanging himself from a railway overbridge at Tirunelveli with a fervent appeal to Prime Minister and Tamil Nadu chief minister to shut the liquor shops.

The body of M Dinesh Nallasivan was found hanging with a string around his neck from the railway overbridge, police said, and was sent to Palayamkottai for the autopsy. Preliminary investigations revealed that the boy's father, Madasamy, was a chronic alcoholic and Dinesh's repeated attempts to make his father quit drinking had failed. Due to this, the family continued to reel under financial duress. A suicide note was recovered from his possession, wherein he appealed to PM Modi and CM Edappadi K Palaniswami to take steps to close all the liquor shops in the state. "If the shops are not shut, my spirit will destroy the shops," the note in Tamil said. He also appealed to his father not to perform his last rites otherwise his soul will not rest in peace. "At least hereafter do not consume liquor, Appa (father)," he stated.

The suicide has revived the demand for the speedy implementation of prohibition in the state. MDMK general secretary Vaiko and PMK leader Dr Anbumani Ramadoss urged the state government to immediately take steps to enforce prohibition. Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said, "Our goal is to enforce total prohibition. We have already shut 1,000 liquor shots in 2016 and 2017."
