Two days after he shared an abusive post in Facebook containing derogatory remarks against women journalists, Chennai Cyber Crime department on Friday evening booked BJP leader and actor SVe Shekher under four sections including a non-bailable section of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

The actor-turned-politician Shekher, who is the brother-in-law of chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, has been booked under Indian Penal Code Section 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), Section 505 (1) (c) (Statements conducing to public mischief: Whoever makes, publishes or circulates any statement, rumour or report with intent to incite, or which is likely to incite, any class or community of persons to commit any offence against any other class or community, Section 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and non-bailable section four of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act.

The case was booked based on the complaint of Tamil Nadu Journalist Protection Welfare Association. Shekher shared the post written by Thirumalai Sa alleging that sexual abuse was rampant in the media than universities, in an apparent reference to the sex scandal involving a woman professor who dragged the name of Tamil Nadu Governor. “Women cannot become a reporter or news reader without sleeping with the top boss,” the post read.

Even though Shekher apologies for the post claiming that he had read the content before sharing it, the headline for the post, “Madurai University, the Governor and a virgin girl’s cheek” was given by him. The police also booked case under various sections of the IPC on 30 journalists for pelting stones at Shekher's residence here on Friday.

Meanwhile, BJP state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan said that Shekher’s claim that he had not read the content of the post was unacceptable and he should take full responsibility. She also said that the party would also take action against him for his abusive social media post. Various journalists unions held protest across the state for the second day in a row condemning the actor-politician Shekher. All the political parties including the ruling AIADMK and DMK condemned him for the vulgar remarks and sought action against him.
