India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday co-chaired the fourth Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) with Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali.
Both leaders reviewed various aspects of bilateral relations. External Affairs Minister was greeted by Bangladesh Foreign Minister and the High Commissioner of India Harsh Shringla on her arrival in Dhaka earlier today.
Swaraj, who is on two-day visit, will also be meeting Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This is Swaraj's second visit to Bangladesh. She last visited the country in 2014.
Later addressing the press, Swaraj highlighted the issues discussed by JCC. She said, " We discussed common challenges, one such challenge is that of terrorism, radicalisation & extremism. We will continue to fight this scourge together and along with other like minded countries.We are determined to protect our societies from threat of ideologies of hate, violence and terror by adopting a zero tolerance policy and a comprehensive approach in fighting violent extremism and terrorism at all levels."
Swaraj also said:
External Affairs Minister also weighed in on the existing Rohinhya crisis. She said that India is deeply concerned with the spate of violence in Rakhine state. EAM said that India has urged for the situation to be handled with restraint, keeping in mind welfare of the people. Regarding long-term solution, Swaraj said, "It is clear that normalcy will only be restored with the return of the displaced persons to Rakhine state. The only long term solution to the situation in Rakhine State is rapid socio-economic and infrastructure development. that would have a positive impact on all the communities living in the state". Bangladesh has asked for the global community to chip in with help after huge influx of Rohingya Muslims who are fleeing Rakhine state of Myanmar.
India so far has taken a hard stance on Rohingya Muslims issue, with Centre telling SC in an affidavit that they are potential security threats.
