President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday said smart sanitation and smart waste management will help in achieving the central government's Swachhta mission. Speaking at a function to declare Urban Maharashtra as Open Defecation Free (ODF), Kovind noted that working for Swachhtais a service to mankind and that uncleanliness is a curse for society even as it impedes economic growth.

He added that fulfilling the objectives of the ongoing Swachh Bharat Mission since 2014 would be the real tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, which is observed on October 2. Incidentally, Sunday was also President Kovind's birthday.

Kovind said that the work done in this field in Maharashtra will encourage other states.

Congratulating the state of Maharashtra in taking the lead in ODF, the President urged everyone to keep toilets neat and clean.

Kovind said the thinking of women in rural areas today is such that they refuse to get married if their in-laws' house does not have a toilet, while those married are refusing to go back to their in-laws' house if there is no toilet there.
Constructing modern toilets would also lead to a reduction in water-borne diseases, he said, adding that a Swachh Bharat would lead to a healthy and prosperous India.

Kovind also felicitated few local bodies and Swachhtaworkers at the launch of the ODF Maharashtra.

Earlier, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the announcement of Urban Maharashtra as ODF – a project that was launched two years ago in the state's 384 urban areas, is a historic moment and that a mass awareness programme will be undertaken to educate the people. He also noted that a three-step validation process will have to completed before a city or a village is declared ODF in Maharashtra.

What the president said

During the Independence movement, wherever (Mahatma) Gandhiji stayed, he used to clean the toilet there himself.
