The BJP and the Congress released final list of their Rajya Sabha candidates late on Sunday night with interestingly inclusion and exclusion of names.
The last date for filing nominations for 58 Rajya Sabha seats is March 12, while the last date of withdrawal is March 15. The counting of votes shall be done on March 23, the day of voting itself.
While the BJP suddenly catapulted many lesser known to prominence by giving tickets to the likes of its media in-charge Anil Baluni from Uttarakhand, rhetorical spokesman GVL Narsimha Rao from Uttar Pradesh and Lt. Gen. (retd.) D P Vats, it denied candidature to firebrand Vinay Katiyar who was at the forefront of Ram Mandir movement.
The BJP also gave ticket to Narayan Rane, a former Congressman, from Maharashtra and billionaire businessman Rajeev Chandrasekhar from Karnataka.
In all, the BJP announced 18 names on Sunday - seven from Uttar Pradesh, two each from Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh and one each from Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Jharkhand.
The Congress too sprung a surprise by declaring Marathi editor Kumar Ketkar (72) as its candidate from Maharashtra among 10 names announced for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections.
It has fielded Rajmani Patel from Madhya Pradesh instead of repeating Satyavrat Chaturvedi while repeating Naranbhai Rathwa and giving second seat in Gujarat to Dr Amee Yajnik.
Senior advocate and party spokesman Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who was twice elected from Rajasthan, has been fielded from West Bengal with the support of the ruling Trinamool Congress there.
