The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday relieved former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar of his duties as the interim president (IPL-related affairs) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Taking on record the statement of BCCI counsel CA Sundaram that the seventh edition of the IPL concluded on June 1, the bench headed by Justice TS Thakur allowed Gavaskar to resume his media commitments, from which he had been barred since his appointment as the board's interim chief in March.

It may be noted that Gavaskar had written to the Supreme Court last week, seeking a clarification on the status of his position and role in the BCCI. The bench also made it clear that Gavaskar can seek compensation for his services to the BCCI, which will consider and apprise the court of it.

BCCI vice-president (South Zone) Shivlal Yadav will continue to be the interim president for all administrative purposes.

It was also decided that the two-judge bench of Justice Ibrahim Kalifulla and Justice Thakur will continue to hear the PIL filed by the Cricket Association of Bihar against the BCCI following the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal of 2013. A committee headed by Justice (retd) Mukul Mudgal is probing the role of 13 prominent cricket personalities, including BCCI president-in-abeyance N Srinivasan. The panel is expected to submit its findings by the end of August.
