Supreme Court refuses to interfere with Bombay High Court order staying Maratha reservation

The Supreme Court on Thursday refuses to hear Maharashtra government's plea against Bombay High Court order staying the decision to give 16% reservation to Marathas in jobs and education.

The apex court said, "It is just an interim order, let the High Court decide it"

On December 5, Maharashtra government had filed a special leave petition before the Supreme Court for a stay on the Bombay High Court order in the Maratha reservations matter.

The High Court had last month stayed the implementation of the decision of the erstwhile Congress-NCP government to provide reservations to the Maratha community in government jobs and educational institutions.

HC had also stayed the decision to provide five % reservation to Muslims in government service but allowed quotas for them in educational institutions, citing "abysmally low" educational achievements and the need to draw the community into the "mainstream of secular education"

Earlier, reacting to the High Court ruling, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis had said, "The state government is fully supportive of the Maratha quota. If the court has pointed out any discrepancy in the law, we will remove any lacunae in it during the winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur."
