The Supreme Court on Tuesday lauded the "effort and hard work" put in the coal blocks allocation matter by former Attorney General Goolam E Vahanvati, who passed away last week.

"The man is no more. The credit must go to him for his effort and hard work put by him in the matter. He prepared the documents in a methodical manner. Efforts made by him must be commended," a bench comprising Chief Justice R M Lodha and justices M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph said.

The words of praise came during hearing when the bench was perusing the documents associated with the matter. Vahannvati had died in Mumbai on September 2 at the age of 65 after a cardiac arrest.

He was the first Muslim to become the top law officer of the country and had served the first UPA government as the Solicitor General before his elevation as Attorney General during the second UPA regime.
