The Supreme Court will hear the PIL filed by journalist Vineet Narayan, against woman IPS officer Archana Ramasundram on Monday who was earlier restrained from functioning from the post of Additional Director in CBI despite appointment. The PIL alleged that the Centre had bypassed the statutory committee's recommendation to appoint Pachnanda to the post. Further the petitioner said that there was clear violation of rules as Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister had ignored a selection committee recommendation to appoint Pachnanda.

Earlier in April, the SC sought explanation from the Centre for taking a decision ignoring recommendation of the selection committee in the appointment of woman IPS officer Archana Ramasundram as additional director of the CBI. The appointment had created controversy in form of a verbal feud between the BJP and the Congress-led UPA government.

The apex court had earlier restrained Ramasundram from functioning as the Additional Director until further instructions as initial arguments suggested that her appointment was in breach of the selection process. Shortly after her appointment on May 8 earlier this year, the issue struck controversy.

She had requested the Tamil Nadu government soon after her being selected for the post in February this year to relieve her from the charge of Director General of Police/ Chairperson, Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services' Recruitment Board.  However, the state government did not revert to the request.

When Ramasundram took charge of the new post in March, the TN government suspended her with “immediate effect” as she was not formally relieved from her post.

The 1980 batch IPS officer belongs to the Tamil Nadu cadre. Her husband, retired IAS officer S Ramasundaram, is said to be close to DMK party. Earlier between 1999-2006, Ramasundaram had served the CBI as deputy inspector general and later as its first woman joint director she handled various cases pertaining to economic offences, including the Telgi stamp scam.

Her appointment was recommended by CBI Director Ranjit Sinha which was later approved by committee headed by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
