The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the West Bengal government to decide within a week on the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) revised plan to take out its Save Democracy yatra in the state.

As per the revised proposal, the yatra will begin from four places and will last for 20 days. Earlier, the party planned to take out the yatra from three places across a 40-day period. West Bengal has to decide and inform the Court by next Tuesday.

The bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and SK Kaul issued a notice on the petition filed by BJP's West Bengal unit challenging a December 21 order passed by a division bench of Calcutta High Court that set aside a single judge's order allowing the procession. The state government had opposed the yatra citing law and order problems.

Coming up before the apex court, the state BJP unit revised its earlier proposal submitted to the West Bengal government in view of the fact that the 40-day period would coincide with the public examinations in the state that could cause inconvenience to students. The party told the Court that it is yet to submit the revised schedule to the state government. The yatra is expected to start from Bahrampur, Diamond Harbour, Midnapore and Kolkata North Lok Sabha constituencies.

The bench directed, "The petitioner will submit a revised schedule of the Rath Yatra/Ganatantra Bachao Yatra/Chetna Yatra to the respondent — State Government, during the course of the day. The State Government shall consider the same."
