The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to Tamil Nadu government for September 15 after hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by lawyer GS Mani in the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant S Anitha’s death case.

The apex court have also issued a notice against the NEET protestors saying, "appropriate action will be taken against those involved in any kind of agitation or stall normal life".

"As an interim measure, it is directed that it shall be the obligation of the chief secretary and principal secretary of Tamil Nadu to ensure that no agitation takes place in relation to the NEET examination that has been upheld by this court," the bench, also comprising A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said.

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court to give direction to the Tamil Nadu government to maintain law and order in the state and ensure that no agitation, strike or protest by political parties or individuals be allowed against the NEET examination.

The petitioner had also submitted that normal life of citizens was gravely affected due to the ongoing protests.

Daughter of a daily wage earner, Anitha aspired to be a doctor. The 17-old-year old committed suicide by hanging herself at her house on September 1 in a village in Ariyalur district. She was reportedly upset after it became known that Tamil Nadu will not be exempted from the ambit of NEET.

The Dalit girl had filed petitions to the Supreme Court against the implementation of NEET 2017 in Tamil Nadu. NEET is a national-level entrance test for admissions to dental and medical colleges.

A day after the suicide, wide protests emerged across the state on September 2. Protestors blamed both the centre and state for Anitha's death. Several political parties and other outfits in the state have opposed NEET saying it will affect rural students.

Political leaders including DMK Working President MK Stalin and VCK founder Thol Thirumavalavan and actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, among others, had condoled Anitha's death.
