Supreme Court appoints RS Cheema as spcial public prosecutor in coal block allocation scam

The Supreme Court appointed senior advocate R S Cheema as Special Public Prosecutor for trial in coal blocks allocation scam. Additional Sessions Judge Bharat Parashar will hold trial in all cases arising out of coal scam. The court of ASJ Bharat Parashar be notified as a special court which will exclusively deal with coal scam. The special court will conduct the trial in coal scam on a day-to-day basis, the Supreme Court conveyed today.

DNA had reported that there was no taker for the job of special public prosecutor to try the illegal coal block allocation cases involving Jindal Steel, Aditya Birla group and others. Senior advocate Gopal Subramanium and Dayan Krishnan had already refused to accept the assignment. Prashant Bhushan had also suggested the name of ARvind Nigam, but CBI did not agree saying he was not a criminal lawyer.

CBI has initiated its preliminary probe into more than 200 cases of illegal allocation of coal blocks. The companies who could be in trouble are Tata Steel, JLD Yavatmal Energy, JAS Infrastructure & Power, AMR Iron & Steel.
