Welcoming the launch of Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the capital on Monday, his supporters hoped the party would bring about transparency in politics and serve as an alternative to India's leading national parties.

"We were looking for an option (to national parties) and we got it in the form of the AAP," said Chandan Raj, an under-graduate student at Delhi University.

"This party (AAP) will bring transparency in politics," said Chandan Raj, who was among hundreds of people gathered near Jantar Mantar on Parliament Street to attend the formal launch of the new party.

Gurpreet Singh Uppal, who was leading a group of India Against Corruption (IAC) members from Assam, said: "They (AAP) will clear the dirty politics of India... We will now vote for the AAP in Assam."

"People will now get an option to vote for candidates with clean image," said Krishna Sharma, a member of the group.

"Politics won't change without Kejriwal coming into power," said Manoj Kumar, an autorickshaw driver.

"We are not getting a fixed price on sugarcane. We hope that Arvind Kejriwal will be able to bring that change," said 28-year-old Praveen Chauhan, a farmer from Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district.

"I believe this party will end corruption," said Ramanand Sharma from Bihar capital Patna. "I will take the AAP membership because 'aam log' (common people) are connected with the party."

"I was a hardcore supporter of the Congress but now I will vote for the AAP in the next election," said Arjit Singh, who runs a medical store in Bajpur town of Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand.
