After being behind bars for over two years on charges of money laundering, three times deputy chief minister of Maharashtra Chhagan Bhujbal will walk free today. Some of his supporters, present in the court, applauded as the order was passed, while others rushed out to break the good news to their seniors in the Nationalist Congress Party.

Justice P N Deshmukh of the Bombay High Court on Friday granted Bhujbal bail on a cash bond of Rs 5 lakh. Bhujbal was arrested in 2016 by the Enforcement Directorate in the Maharashtra Sadan case. He and his nephew Sameer – along with others – were charged with taking kick-backs to the tune of Rs 887 crore in a government guesthouse project. The allegations have been strongly refuted by Bhujbal.

This is the second time that Bhujbhal has moved the high court. Earlier bail was requested primarily on medical grounds, claiming he suffered from a heart condition and other serious ailments. The court rejected the plea after prison officials assured that he could be given proper treatment at a government hospital.

He is currently admitted at KEM hospital, and was given bail on account of ill-health and his advanced age.

His advocate sought bail on the grounds that Bhujbhal is 71 years old, investigations in the case are over and the apex court has held Section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, which prevents granting of bail, unconstitutional.

Bhujbhal will have to submit his passport to the court and can leave Mumbai, even to go to his hometown Nashik, only after taking prior permission from the court. Justice Deshmukh also warned that bail would be cancelled if he was found making any attempts to influence the trial, witnesses or tamper with evidence.
