A week after his junior officer was appointed navy chief, Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha, former chief of the Mumbai-based Western Naval Command, suffered a major cardiac arrest. He has been admitted to the naval hospital with coronary artery blockages. Defence minister AK Antony has instructed the chief of naval staff to personally monitor Sinha's health and provide all the necessary assistance to him.

"He was admitted with coronary blockage on Monday morning. His condition is stable and he is out of danger now," an official said.

Sinha was upset at being superseded for the post of navy chief. Despite being the senior-most naval commander, his junior officer, Vice Admiral RK Dhowan, was appointed navy chief by the government on April 17. Upset with the decision, Sinha put in his papers hours after Dhowan took over as the 22nd navy chief. In his communication to Antony, Sinha wrote that if "justice" cannot be done to him, he should be given voluntary retirement. In fact, last Monday, Sinha went to Delhi and met Antony at his residence before demitting office.

Sources close to Sinha said he should not be held responsible for the recent mishaps which happened under his command. They said the full facts about the naval accidents were not communicated to the ministry. The navy was without a chief for 50 days after Admiral DK Joshi resigned over repeated mishaps involving warships.
