The attacks in Sukma that killed 26 Central Reserve Police on Monday afternoon was one of the worst ambushes by Naxal forces in recent times.

The fateful attack took place around 12:30 pm when about 300 Maoists armed with automatic weapons swooped on jawans of 74th Battalion of CRPF while they were busy assisting a road construction party at Kalapathar in Burkapal near Maoist-affected Chintagufa in Sukma district.

The attacks brought back memories of 2010, when 76 jawans were attacked and killed by Naxals in the state's  Chintalnar district.

DNA visited one of the CRPF camps at the time to see the living conditions of the jawans. While one of the officers was showing the journalist around, a number of jawans began shouting about the pitiful conditions they lived in.

One of them said, "“The government has forgotten us. We are made to rot here and die.”

One jawan even requested that the journalist save them from "this hell."
