Internationally renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik today said he will create sand sculptures highlighting Odisha s rich culture during the 22nd Asian Athletics Championship being held here next month.

Sand arts, to be carved out in the premises of Kalinga Stadium before the inauguration of the mega event on July 5, would seek to promote the rich cultural heritage of the state, Pattnaik said.

Sudarsan has planned to create a miniature of the Sun Temple of Konarak, a world heritage monument. Around nine tonnes of sand would be used to create all these sculptures, said the artist.

"Around four days will be required to complete the entire work. The objective is to make the participants in the international sport event aware of Odisha's rich culture," said Sudarsan, who has participated in more than 50 sand art championships and festivals around the world and won many prizes for the country.

Over 1000 athletes and delegates from 45 countries are slated to take part in the event which is scheduled to conclude on July 9.

Sudarsan has created many sand sculptures in different international sport events like Doha Asian games, Delhi Commonwealth games and cricket World Cup in London.

The government has also taken steps for showcasing different facets of rich and diverse Odisha's culture at the sport event to attract people and athletes taking part in the championship.
