Criticising the Centre on issues including the Kudankulam nuclear row, BJP on Monday  slammed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for making "mere accusations without substantiating" and not acting on alleged foreign funding to anti-nuclear protestors.

"If (Singh's) allegations are true, then he must clarify (on the action) as FCRA (clearance) is issued by Union Home Ministry. This does not behold the stature of Prime Minister that he makes allegations without substantiating them," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters in Chennai.

In an interview to Science magazine, the Prime Minister appeared to have blamed some US-based NGOs for difficulties at Kudankulam.

"The atomic energy programme has gone into difficulties because these NGOs, mostly I think based in the United States, don't appreciate the need for our country to increase the energy supply," he had said.

Javadekar said Singh must also clarify on the controversy surrounding Bt Brinjal, as he had alleged the hand of foreign NGOs behind the protests, though his cabinet colleague and former Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh "contradicted" him.

"The Prime Minister cannot sit quiet. He has to speak out, telling who the organisations are and why the government failed to control them. He has to take action," he said.

Anyone could make allegations over such issues but the government is duty-bound to allay the fears of people, he said.

As for BJP's stand over the Kudankulam plant, whose commissioning has been stalled by anti-nuke protestors over safety concerns, he said, "We want all types of energy".
