Students took to streets of Kolkata and New Delhi protesting against the alleged molestation of a girl on the Jadavpur University campus, a case that has created ripples across the country. In the wake of the incident, the students of Jadavpur University staged a protest on Saturday holding banners and shouting slogans.

The protesters shutdown the institution and demanded resignation of vice-chancellor of the University over alleged molestation of other students during their protest. The incident happened when students were demonstrating against molestation of their colleague in Kolkata. The student was molested by few male students who dragged her inside the boys' hostel on August 28. "On September 16 night police has beaten Jadavpur students without any reason. They were standing there protesting against the VC (vice-chancellor) and by any chance police came at night and they beat them. We want justice," said a student, Ronin in Kolkata.

Students further alleged that police authorities dragged out students and manhandled them. More than 30 students were arrested by the police while some of them were also injured. Meanwhile, thousands of students from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and alumni of Jadavpur University staged a demonstration against the incident outside Banga Bhawan in the national capital and expressed solidarity with the girl student.

The students shouted slogans and formed human chain holding placards and banners. "We demand the resignation of VC and we demand that the reason for which these protests have started, there should be proper investigation into the matter and the accused be punished," said a protester, Raunak in New Delhi.

Last month during a festival organised by the college as many as ten male students had allegedly dragged a female student of the University into the boys' hostel and molested her. The alleged victim informed the college authorities and filed a police complaint, following which the officials have begun the investigations. However, no arrests have been made so far.
