Students defy Presidency University to screen ‘India’s Daughter’ documentary

Presidency University students defied authorities to screen the ‘India’s Daughter’ documentary on Wednesday. Students screened the controversial documentary inside their union hall after they were denied permission to screen it at the Derozio Hall.

A day ago, students of the university were denied permission to screen the controversial documentary at the Derozio Hall of the university by the varsity Vice Chancellor Anuradha Lohia.

When Kolkata Police learnt that the unions have decided to screen the documentary at the university campus, they rushed to the spot. While the police tried to persuade the students from screening the documentary, they remained firm on their stand. Police warned students that they would take action as per law if the documentary was screened.

However, students claim that it was a ‘closed door’ screening, as a result of which it does not violate any norms laid down by the university.

'India’s Daughter', made by British documentary film-maker Leslee Udwin was banned by the Centre for featuring the interview of Mukesh Singh, one of the accused in the December 16 Delhi gang-rape case.The Central government had stepped in and procured a court order banning the release of the documentary by citing that it contains ‘objectionable content’.
