Despite a marathon seven-hour meeting that went past midnight on Wednesday, negotiations failed and state transport buses remained off roads for the third day in a row.

Talks between transport minister Diwakar Raote and the labour unions on Wednesday, who have been demanding salary revision through a 25 percent hike based on 7th Pay Commission, among other demands, proved unfruitful. The unions remained adamant on their strike almost after 13 rounds of discussions. "We have offered whatever we can," said Raote.

"We cannot give one penny extra. Now the union leaders have to take a call". Sources said the government had offered a hike up to Rs 7,000, and even an increase in pay to those hired on contractual basis.

Many people were forced to use private buses or go by special trains, and private operators and taxi services continue to levy higher-than-usual rates. Some sectors, such as Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Kolhapur and Konkan have seen a 100 percent jump in rates.

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is the largest public transport body in the country with fleet of more than 18,000 buses.
