India on Monday tore into Pakistan's statement on the poll-meddling allegations in Gujarat.

“Condemn this unwarranted statement,” said Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad after the Pakistan foreign ministry tweeted about the allegations by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Islamabad was interfering in the elections in his home state.

“Completely abhor outside interference in India's internal affairs. Pakistan's promotion of terrorism in India is well known but Pakistan must stop giving us lessons, we are proud of our democracy,” Prasad was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Earlier on Monday, Dr Mohammad Faisal, the spokesperson of the Pakistan Foreign Ministry, tweeted that India must not drag Pakistan in its electoral debates.

“India should stop dragging Pakistan into its electoral debate and win victories on own strength rather than fabricated conspiracies, which are utterly baseless and irresponsible,” he said in a tweet.

The poll-meddling allegations were made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an election rally in Gujarat's Sanand.

On Sunday, while addressing the rally, he had said asked about the 'secret meeting' of top Pakistani officials at the residence of now-suspended Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar in New Delhi.

"On one hand, Pakistan Army's former DG is interfering in Gujarat's election, and on the other, Pakistani people are holding a meeting at Mani Shankar Aiyar's house. After that meeting, people of Gujarat, backward communities, poor people and Modi were insulted. Don't you think such events raise doubts?" he had said while addressing a poll rally in Gujarat.

The prime minister also raised questions about the alleged appeal by former director general (DG) of the Pakistan Army Sardar Arshad Rafiq for making senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel chief minister of Gujarat.
