Even though the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is still far away from normal, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), managing internal security in the state along with Indian Army and local police, claimed that stone pelting incidents in the valley has declined by half.

CRPF Director General Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar said, "So far this year, only 424 stone-pelting incidents have been reported as opposed to 1,590 incidents last year." He was speaking at the 78th anniversary celebration of the force.

He attributed the decline to Central government policies and combined effort of security and intelligence forces and agencies. "Combined effort of the security forces, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and all agencies including National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made this happen," he said.

He further pointed out that CRPF is closely working with state police to deal with Law & Order situation in the state, particularly stone pelting. "Our troops are properly trained to handle volatile Law and Order situation; maintaining restraint, using proper strategy and equipment, and lesser usage of lethal weapons to control violent mob," he said.

He also said 75 terrorists have been killed by central paramilitary forces in J&K in last year. In addition, 252 terrorists have been apprehended and 118 arms recovered.

Further, the force exalted their June 5 operation where in a Fidayeen attack on 45 battalion of CRPF camp at Sumbal in Bandipora was thwarted by jawans, and all the four Fidayeens were neutralised.

After terrorist attack on Amarnath pilgrims in which seven, including five women, were killed and many were injured, the CRPF, in a bid to prevent any further such tragedy, has increased patrolling and checkposts in coordination with local police over there.

Till now, the force is dependent on its own 'jugaad' system. "The force made some changes in the structure in the combat vehicles to make it partial bullet proof locally,"he said adding that the force will now in process of procuring full bullet proof vehicles for combat purpose.

The jawans put different shapes and sizes of the panel to the inside and outside of the vehicles. "A mechanism is working pretty well. We have told our troopers to procure the material locally in order to safeguard its personnel who are otherwise exposed to risk in a conflict region," he said.

The force has now planned procure bullet proof vehicles and buses to carry pilgrims.
