One person was dead and two got injured during fresh police firing in Thoothukudi's Anna Nagar on Wednesday. The police had opened fire to disperse the protesters who were pelting stones on the cops. 

The fresh firing comes a day after 11 people were killed and 65 injured due to clashes between police and protesters demanding closure of the plant on Tuesday.

The agitation turned violent after protestors were not allowed to march up to the plant, due to which they began to pelt stones and topple police vehicles.

In retaliation, police officials resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

In the wake of the tragedy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the kin of the deceased, Rs 3 lakh for those severely injured and Rs 1 lakh for those who sustained minor injuries.

Palaniswami also announced government jobs for the family of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Centre today asked the Tamil Nadu government to provide details of the incident at Tuticorin where nine people were killed in police firing during protest demanding the closure of Vedanta group's Sterlite Copper plant over pollution concerns, officials said.

Union Home Ministry officials said the ministry is in touch with the state government over the developments in the port town in the southern state.

The protests were going on in Tuticorin for over three months, but violence erupted on Tuesday.
