This week's edition of The Dr Subhash Chandra show saw the Chairman of Essel Group interacting with students of BIMTECH, answering questions on how to make it big in the corporate world. Being a successful entrepreneur himself, Chandra has been sharing his experiences and success stories for the benefit of the next generation.

Here are some of the questions asked by students during the interaction:

Is it advisable to sell a successful start-up and become rich, or stay independent?

There's nothing bad in selling your company if you get more than expected. Even I had an offer to do so in 1995, but I didn't as the media caters to the whole country and foreign investment could have ruined it.

How did you come up with the concept of the Indian Cricket League?

When the ICL was started, the Indian team was lowly ranked. We wanted to provide the bench strength to the team. Moreover, the ICL was a mix of business, love for the game and patriotism for the country.

Is it good to be emotionally attached to one's organisation?

It is good to be attached to your company while you are working for it as it enhances your work, but after leaving the company, move on, otherwise it might adversely affect you.

Is digital media affecting TV media?

Ten years down, the media landscape will be very different than what it is now. Media houses will produce content but it will be up to the common people to choose how they want to consume it.

What is the right age to be an entrepreneur?

Honestly speaking, I have seen talented children who have the ability to sell their ideas well. Moreover, skill, knowledge and talent are three different things. Skills can be transferred, Knowledge can be achieved and entrepreneurship is a talent that you either have or you don't. An ability to think beyond today and achieve 80-90% of it, makes a person a visionary.

Apart from answering the questions of the enthusiastic students, Dr Subhash Chandra also gave a few tips about how a newcomer can be successful in the industry. Acknowledging that there is no easy way to do this, he listed 6 broad points that a newcomer should keep in mind.

1- Role Clarity: Get some clarity about your role at the organisation and analyse if you are up for the responsibilities.

2- Seek co-operation: It is extremely necessary for a newcomer to work in co-operation with the team.

3- Stay Motivated: Never stand back and take the required decisions whenever needed. Always stay high on energy and work for the organisation with zeal.

4 - Market yourself: Today, it's important that you talk about your work and responsibilities, as nobody else will do it for you.

5 - Don't stay quiet: Make sure your opinion is heard

6 - Keep your boss happy: Make sure you do not shirk your work and give your hundred percent at the work place.
