Intense heatwave gripped several parts of the country on Sunday, with mercury clocking 48.9 degrees Celsius in Churu, Rajasthan, where one person succumbed to the extreme temperature.

Rajasthan apart, most of north and central India, Telangana and Odisha reeled under scorching heat as temperatures crossed 45 degrees Celsius in many areas. The situation is unlikely to improve on Monday and Tuesday, said the India Meteorological Department.

Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Kota and Barmer in Rajasthan were among worst affected, said the MeT department. The Saurashtra region of Gujarat, particularly Rajkot, Surendranagar and Amreli, experienced unbearable heat conditions.

The situation in Uttar Pradesh was no different. "It is only due to the trees that you can stand here. We drink lemon juice, sugarcane juice and eat ice creams to bear with the heat. Other than that we carry umbrellas," Mohammad Zaheer a resident of Lucknow said.

In Telangana, Adilabad district recorded the maximum temperature of 45.3 degrees Celsius, as the IMD issued heatwave warning at isolated pockets on June 5 and 6.

People are prone to heat stroke, sunburn, skin allergy, diarrhoea during extreme heat conditions. The rising mercury is forcing people to stay indoor most of the day, with demands for air conditioners and coolers rising sharply.
