The Armed Forces Week, a new initiative of the Ministry of Defence to salute the sacrifices of soldiers and to raise funds, was kicked off on Friday. This year, actors Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Varun Dhawan are a part of the week-long campaign, meant to spread awareness and urge people to make financial contributions for the families of martyrs and disabled soldiers.

The three celebrities put out videos on Twitter, urging people to donate generously.

"These bravehearts lay down their lives for us, show them your gratitude this #ArmedForcesWeek. To contribute, log onto http://www.ksb.gov.in/FundPayment.htm now," Akshay Kumar stated on Twitter.

Khan's message read: "Hey guys, watch the video and do the best you can to participate and support the #ArmedForcesFlagDay."

"Our armed forces sacrifice their lives just to keep us safe. Let's show our gratitude by celebrating #ArmedForcesWeek," Dhawan tweeted.

In a video message, Dhawan also said that whenever there was a natural disaster or any other trouble, the armed forces were quick to react.

Their messages were tweeted by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who thanked the stars for being a part of the initiative.

"Join us in wearing Armed Forces flag between 1-7 Dec to pay respects to the brave sons and daughters of our nation. You can also contribute towards welfare of war-widows, children of martyrs, and ex-servicemen by visiting http://ksb.gov.in. Jai Hind," Sitharman said.

Over the course of the week, more celebrities are expected to join the campaign.

A digital campaign spread across Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms has also been organised to encourage people to wear the armed forces flag with pride and show their support and solidarity with the military.

Several ministers and political leaders also active posted related messages on the social media.

The Armed Forces Flag Day Fund was setup in 1993, to extend support to disabled ex-servicemen, war widows, and children of martyrs. Since 1949, December 7 has been celebrated as the Armed Forces Flag Day to commemorate the sacrifices and bravery of Indian soldiers.
