The under-16 girl's football team of St Augustine High School, Nerul, emerged winner in RISO cancer awareness cup recently, where a total 32 teams from Navi Mumbai, Mumbai and Mumbai suburbs participated.
The tournament was conducted by the Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA) at its ground in Dhobi Talao in Mumbai. In the final, the team defeated Convent of Jesus and Marys, Colaba.
In the seven-a-side football girls tournament, St Augustine started with a comprehensive win against Apostolic High School, Mumbai, in the knock out tournament. They defeated Apostolic High School by 8-0. "Our girls completely outplayed the opponent," said Hemant Zende, coach of St Augustine.
In the quarter-finals, they played against St Annes, Fort, and won the match 6-0. Pooja Dhamal scored three goals while one goal each was scored by Pranali Shetty, Poonam Kharade and Reetika Sahani.
In the semi-final, they encountered a tough competition from St Lawrence, Borivli but won the match 3-2. Pooja Dhamal, Pranali Shetty and Poonam Kharade scored one goal each.
The final match was again one sided where St Augustine defeated Convent of Jesus & Marys, Colaba 2-0. "We did not allow the opponent team to score in the short format game," said Zende.
The special attraction of the tournament was the visiting guest. During the prize distribution ceremony, actor Jackie Shroff made an appearance.
"The overall performance of our team was satisfactory. They dominated in the tournament and gave their best," said an ecstatic Zende.
