Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha constituency: Candidates for 2019 LS poll, past results, all updates

The key contest here is going to be held between DMK's TR Baalu and PMK's A Vaithilingam. PMK is contesting the polls in alliance with the AIADMK.

Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha Constituency 2019: Sriperumbudur parliamentary constituency will go to polls on April 18, which is the second phase of Lok Sabha election 2019. The polling in 38 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu will be held in the second phase with polling in Vellore cancelled. The key contest here is going to be held between DMK's TR Baalu and PMK's A Vaithilingam. PMK is contesting election in alliance with the AIADMK. 

The two major parties in Tamil Nadu — AIADMK and DMK — have entered into an alliance with a number of parties for the forthcoming elections. 
 
AIADMK is contesting the election in alliance with BJP, PMK, DMDK, Tamil Maanila Congress, Puthia Tamizagam, Puthia Needhi Katchi and NR Congress. While MK Stalin's DMK has aligned with Congress, CPI(M), CPI, MDMK, VCK, IUML, KMDK and IJK.  

AIADMK’s KN Thiru Ramachandran is the sitting MP here who defeated S Thiru Jagathrakshakan of the DMK by a margin of more than 1 lakh votes. However, AIADMK has not fielded its candidate in 2019 and has alotted the seat to its alliance partner PMK.

Since the key contest here is expected to take place between DMK and PMK, the MK Stalin’s party has is banking upon TR Baalu who defeated PMK’s AK Moorthy in 2009.

Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha results in 2014 and 2009

2014: KN Thiru Ramachandran of the AIADMK received 545820 votes and he defeated S Thiru Jagathrakshakan of the DMK who only got 443174 votes. 

2009: Thalikkottai Rajuthevar Baalu of the DMK received 352641 votes. He defeated AK Moorthy of the PMK who only got 327605 votes. 

Sriperumbudur holds signigifcant poltiical importance as its the place where former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, was a assasinated as a result of a suicide bombing on May 21, 1991. At least 15 people were killed along with Rajiv Gandhi after a suicide bomber carried out the attack. 

The attack was planned by a member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a terror organization based in Sri Lanka when India had just ended its involvement in its peace Keeping mission in the Sri Lankan Civil War. 

At least 7 people involved in the Rajiv Gandhi assasination were sentenced to 7-year imprisonment. Recently, one of the prisoners in the case, Nalini has approached the Madras High Court seeking a leave for six-months in view of her daughter's marriage.

Thiruvallur, Chennai North, Chennai South, Chennai Central, Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram, Arakkonam, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Arani, Viluppuram, Kallakurichi, Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Tiruppur, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Pollachi, Dindigul, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Sivaganga, Madurai, Theni, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukkudi, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari.

Indian parliamentary elections 2019 are taking place in 7 phases. The first-phase voting has already taken place which was held on April 11. The remaining phases will go to polls on April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19. Counting of votes will be held on May 23.
