Braving sub-zero temperatures, a group of Shiv Sena members tried to unfurl the tricolor at the historic Lal Chowk in a bid to offset the challenge of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.
Last month Abdullah had dared the Centre to hoist the national flag in the historic Lal Chowk before talking about unfurling it in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.
Police, however, detained some Shiv Sena workers and took them to the Kothi Bagh police station where they were made to talk to the top police officers and accordingly were allowed to wave the national flag outside the police station.
“We had reached Lal Chowk early in the morning. We unfurled the flag but police immediately bundled us into the vans and took us to the police station. We later talked to the DGP. We were told to unfurl the flag ahead of Lal Chowk. Later police took us in proper arrangement to the area where we unfurled the flag”, said Manish Sahni, general secretary of Shiv Sena, Jammu and Kashmir.
Sahni asserted that despite police posse they were able to unfurl the tricolor at Lal Chowk before being whisked away. “We unfurled the tricolor at around 6 am because we knew they will not allow us later. It was after we unfurled the tricolor that they whisked us away in the police vans”, he said.
Inspector General of police, Kashmir Zone, Munir Ahmad Khan said the Shiv Sena had not sought the mandatory permission from the district magistrate for the event.
“There is proper procedure. One has to apply for proper permission before any such event. The permission is given by the district magistrate. This is a public place and they had not applied for the permission”, he said.
